You Think You Know, But You Have No Idea (The Truth about Subway)

Dear Leah Renee,

I work a nine to five job and each day take a break for lunch, often with some co-workers.  One of the places we go semi-frequently is Subway but I’ve heard on and off that it’s not good for me.  Is this true?  I get a pretty basic sandwich and don’t even eat the chips!  Let me know! Thanks. –Alexis, TX

“Food isn’t complicated, we are” is something I thought of the other day.  What I mean by that is throughout the years, mankind has absolutely changed the composition of many foods we eat.  We constantly hear “eat real foods”, but many of the foods that were once real are no longer.  Example: the meat in your Subway sandwich.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like being tricked!!!  When I see something that looks like turkey, tastes like turkey, and smells like turkey, one would think it’s turkey!  Unfortunately, you’re getting a lot more with the little bird.  “Eat Fresh” sounds healthy, but the only way Subway is keeping their meat fresh is by adding a bunch of preservatives.  Not so fresh.

Here are a list of what is in just turkey alone:

  • Chemical Additives
  • Refine Bleached Flour
  • Preservatives
  • Artificial Colors
  • Hidden MSG
  • Refined Sugars
  • Possible GMO’s
  • Salt, Salt, Salt
  • All of the above plus many others equaling a total of over 50 ingredients!!!

Thanks to the AMAZING Food Babe who is always out for our best interest, she created this chart when reporting and decoding Subway’s wrongdoings:

Lastly, marketing is a huge part of the food industry and that means we get deals!  We can get a foot long sandwich for what a small one would cost!  We get free chips and a drink!  Who can say no to that?!  And THAT’S the difference between our mind and body.  Our mind knows a deal, our stomach knows when it’s full.  It doesn’t care how much you spent or saved.  Don’t get me wrong, getting two movie tickets for the price of one is a great deal because two people are benefiting.  It only wants enough for one.  It can be difficult to resist temptations and savings.

If you would like a great alternative, local grocery stores offer a very similar selection with fresh meats that are all cut right there.  Give your body what it recognizes, and taste the real freshness in that.
